A Ramble through Lakeview Cemetery
Graveyards are, I feel, underrated sites for peaceful walks because the park-like atmosphere can’t be beat. Lakeview Cemetery is located just north of Capitol Hill’s Volunteer Park and dates back to 1872 boasting over 40,000 graves. Notaries buried here range from Kikisoblu, the daughter of Chief Sealth (the man whom Seattle is named after), to the founder of Nordstrom’s department stores, John Nordstrom. Many of the founders of Seattle, such as Arthur Denny, Doc Maynard, Thomas Mercer, and Henry Yesler are buried here as well as both Bruce and Brandon Lee.
This walk is a long, roundabout loop on a cold, wet Seattle winter morning with the sun low in the sky. I glimpse just about every part of the grounds. From the entrance, I work my way in an inward spiral until I get to the center. I pass by the founders and end at the Lee’s site. Enjoy!
