Rambling Seattle

A Ramble from the Dravus Bridge to the Chittenden Locks

Magnolia is a quiet, secluded neighborhood of Seattle that is only accessible by boat on the north, west and south sides, or by one of the three bridges that span the railyards on the east. This walk starts at the central of the three bridges and, instead of going up the hill and into Magnolia, moves north and ends up winding through some residential streets before crossing the Chittenden Locks, informally known as the Ballard Locks. The locks allow boats to pass from Puget Sound on the west, into and out of Lake Union and Lake Washington to the east, despite the lakes having a higher water level. Pretty ingenious, really.

It is a typical grey-trying-to-be-blue, chilly early spring day in the city. When the sun is out the flower garden on the north side of the locks and the fish ladder on the south are very popular spots. Enjoy!
